How Much Does Self Storage Cost? A Plain-English Guide for East Sussex

If you have searched for self storage prices, you will have noticed there is rarely a single answer. Prices vary depending on what you rent, how long for and what is included. This guide explains what affects the cost and how to make sure you only pay for what you need. We will only quote our own prices here, because we cannot speak for other providers.

What affects the cost of self storage?

Several things usually decide what you will pay each month:

  • Size: bigger spaces generally cost more. Before you rent, work out how much you actually need to store.
  • Type of storage: a smaller internal unit and a full container are priced differently.
  • Contract length: some providers ask for minimum terms. Others, like us, do not.
  • Access: restricted hours can cost you convenience, even if the price looks low.
  • Extras and deposits: always ask what is included, whether any deposit or fees apply, and what the total will be.

Container storage vs internal storage: how the price compares

At Chock-a-Block Storage, internal storage units start from £100 per month and 20ft containers start from £150 per month. The internal unit is the smaller, indoor option, which suits a modest amount of furniture or boxes. The container is a much larger space with drive-up access, which suits big moves, tools and business stock.

The cheapest option is not always the one with the lowest headline figure. If you have a lot to store, one container may be a better fit than trying to squeeze everything into a unit that is too small. You can read more about each option on our internal storage and container hire pages.

How to avoid paying for more space than you need

  1. Make a list. Note your largest items and estimate the number of boxes.
  2. Declutter first. There is little point paying monthly to store things you plan to throw away.
  3. Take things apart. Flat-packed furniture takes up less room.
  4. Use the height. Stack boxes sensibly and use shelving where you can.
  5. Ask for advice. If you are not sure which size you need, we can help you decide before you commit.

Why contract length matters

A low monthly price can look very different if you are tied into a long minimum term. If your plans change, you might pay for months of space you no longer need. We do not have long-term contracts, so you can store for as long as you need and stop when you are done. That flexibility is especially useful for house moves, renovations and seasonal storage, where you cannot always predict the end date.

What to check before you rent

  • Access hours: can you get to your things when you need to? Our customers have 24-hour access, every day.
  • Security: ask about CCTV and how the site is protected. Our yard has 24/7 CCTV.
  • Drive-up access: can you park at the door? This can save a lot of time and effort with heavy items.
  • The full cost: ask for a clear quote that covers everything, including any deposit.

Frequently asked questions

How much is self storage per month in East Sussex?

It depends on the size and type of space. At Chock-a-Block Storage, internal units start from £100 per month and 20ft containers from £150 per month.

Is container storage cheaper than a storage unit?

Not necessarily, because they are different sizes. Our internal units start at a lower price, but a container gives you far more room, so the better value depends on how much you have to store.

Do I have to pay a deposit?

A deposit applies. The deposit amount is confirmed when you enquire.

What size do I need?

List your biggest items and estimate your boxes, then ask us for a recommendation. We would rather you choose the right size than overpay.
