Choosing a storage size is one of the trickiest parts of renting. Too small and you cannot fit everything in. Too big and you are paying for empty space. The good news is that a few minutes of planning will usually get you to the right answer. This guide walks you through it.
Step 1: List what you need to store
Start with your biggest and bulkiest items, such as sofas, beds, wardrobes, tables, appliances and any long items like ladders or timber. Then estimate how many boxes you have. Do not forget awkward items such as bikes, garden furniture or tools. Having this list in front of you makes everything else easier.
Step 2: Match your list to the storage type
We offer two options at our Bexhill-on-Sea yard:
- Internal storage units, from £100 per month. These suit smaller loads, such as boxes, a few pieces of furniture, hobby items or seasonal belongings.
- 20ft containers, from £150 per month. These suit larger loads, such as the furniture from a house move, business stock, tools and equipment.

Step 3: Think about how you will use it
Size is not the only consideration. Ask yourself:
- Will you visit often? If you need regular access, leave a walkway so you can reach items without unloading everything.
- Do you have heavy or awkward items? Drive-up access to a container door means you can park right beside it.
- How long will you need it? There are no long-term contracts with us, so you can start with what you need and review later.
Rough guidance by situation
Every situation is different, so treat these as starting points rather than promises.
- A few boxes and small items: an internal unit is usually enough.
- Some furniture and boxes from one or two rooms: an internal unit may work, depending on the items.
- A full house move or clear-out: a 20ft container is the more likely fit. It is approximately 5.9m long, 2.35m wide and 2.39m high inside.
- Business stock, tools or equipment: a container is often the more practical option, especially with drive-up access.
Tips to avoid paying for too much space
- Declutter before you pack.
- Take furniture apart where possible.
- Use boxes of a similar size so they stack neatly.
- Use the full height of the space, safely.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Guessing without measuring. A quick look at your largest items and a count of your boxes beats a rough hunch.
- Forgetting about access. If you will need to reach things regularly, allow space for a walkway rather than packing wall to wall.
- Choosing on price alone. A space that is slightly too small can cost you more in the end if you need a second one. It is worth thinking about the total volume you will really have.
- Leaving it to the last minute. If a move or renovation date is fixed, enquire early so your storage is ready when you need it.
Not sure? Just ask
If you are on the fence between the two sizes, tell us what you are storing and we will give you an honest recommendation. We would rather you pick the right space than overpay. Our site is at 5 Brett Drive, Bexhill-on-Sea, and we welcome customers from Hastings, St Leonards, Eastbourne, Battle, Rye, Lewes and Tunbridge Wells. You can also check our storage prices to see what each option costs.
When you are ready, get in touch to reserve or call 01424 732643. A deposit applies, and the amount is confirmed when you enquire.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if an internal unit is big enough?
Count your large items and boxes. If it is a handful of boxes and a little furniture, an internal unit is likely to work. If you are clearing a whole house, a container is probably the better choice. Ask us if you are unsure.
What if I choose the wrong size?
Talk to us. With no long-term contracts, it is easier to adjust than with providers that tie you in for months.
Can I get to my things whenever I want?
Yes. Access is available 24 hours a day, every day, and the yard has 24/7 CCTV.
